OwnersEng

Since 2009, AZTEC has provided Owner’s Engineering Services for major US solar Developers and Owners. Our team provides early project development support, including environmental and cultural assessment, topographic campaigns, ALTA surveys, site due diligence, and LCOE optimization. In addition, we also provide conceptual plant design, bidding design packages, technical support during EPC selection process and contract negotiations, engineering review process, technical support for financial partners, and plant performance evaluation.

Our distinctive feature is our innovation and technical excellence, achieved through design and field experience and the continuous development of proprietary software tools and methodologies, which are in advance of current industry standards, including our patented solar BIM and optimization software PVGRAdTM, proprietary plant performance evaluation methods, reflectivity analysis software, 1-minute solar irradiance generators and energy yield models.  With our expertise and tools, we help our clients to optimize their projects and mitigate risks at early development stages.

AZTEC provides full engineering design services for large-scale solar projects across the country. Our design approach is entirely based on construction cost optimization. Thanks to our patented proprietary solar BIM software PVGRAdTM , AZTEC pioneered in 2018 the grading vs. steel design optimization standards, which are now a solar industry reference worldwide, with more than 3GW built in the US and 18GW of projects built around the globe.

Early in the conceptual design phase, and in close coordination with the client, our expertise provides a unique design approach resulting in the construction cost optimization and procurement logistics effectiveness that these large infrastructures require. The optimized conceptual design is then further developed down to final design level, covering all the necessary construction details later needed in the field, from 3D CAD grading surfaces to detailed pile point list files, among other data extracted from the project digital twin.

Our team of civil, hydrology, structural and electrical experts develop the necessary detailed studies and reports as needed for the successful permitting process and per final owner’s requirements. All of this is done in close coordination with the client and using the best engineering management practices.

AZTEC has successfully completed final design services for large-scale solar projects in North America since 2012. Some of our projects include:

  • Marathon & Agincourt, Kern County (CA), 30MW
  • La Laguna, Coahuila (Mexico), 100MW
  • Undisclosed, Early County (GA), 120MW
  • Undisclosed, Dawson County (GA), 90MW
  • Undisclosed, Spotsylvania County (VA), 485MW
  • Spanish Peaks, Las Animas County (CO), 50MW
  • Undisclosed, Denton County (TX), 320MW (on-going)
  • Bailey, Woodruff County (AR), 150MW
  • Undisclosed, Fayette County (TX), 240MW (on-going)

CommunitySolar

Since 2016 AZTEC has provided engineering services to local developers and EPC contractors for a multiplicity of Community Solar and other distributed generation portfolios in Colorado, Minnesota, Arkansas, New York, Kansas, and Illinois. Community Solar projects usually range between 1MW and 5MW. Our scope covers the full final design for the projects, including the Civil, Electrical, and Structural disciplines.

From initial design optimization to MV interconnection design and plant performance evaluation, AZTEC supports our clients through the building permit process, interacting with local utilities, developing construction-oriented final engineering design, and providing engineering assistance through the construction and commissioning process. Our expertise in this specific solar market is demonstrated with our +70 projects built to date.

Our PVGRAdTM proprietary software can help optimize earthwork and steel in complex topographies with an automatic design tool that uses advanced algorithms. The main benefits of this unique software are:

  • Optimization of earthwork grading
  • Reduction of steel and foundation costs
  • Fast-track design process
  • Optimize Levelized Cost of Electricity (LCOE) – real 3D photovoltaic production calculations
  • Optimize procurement process and construction logistics
  • Real 3D reflectivity analysis

Construction Management

Once the construction phase begins, AZTEC offers a permanent on-site team of Field Supervisors for QA/QC purposes, from groundbreaking to commissioning. Our field team representatives ensure that the project is constructed within the budget, schedule and quality bounds defined in the EPC contract, and acts as the liaison between the EPC contractor and the owner for all technical matters, together with the strong support from our engineering staff.

Field activities include the development of the inspection point lists, document control, attendance to construction meetings, close communication with the EPC contractor, monitoring of daily construction progress, witnessing testing and commissioning activities, performing random inspections, attendance to FATs, and reporting activities.

Some of our major Construction Supervision projects are:

  • Mount Signal Solar-I, Imperial Valley (CA), 165MW
  • Beacon 2 & 5, Kern County (CA), 90MW
  • Summer & Winter Wheat, Fresno County (CA), 30MW
  • Townsite, Clark County (NV), 270MW PV + 90MW BESS
