AZTEC served as the prime consultant to provide emergency and extremely fast-track final engineering design and environmental compliance documents for the Interim Detour of US89 after it suffered a crippling landslide that closed the route on February 20, 2013. The purpose of the project was to restore essential traffic and mobility to the area by providing a more direct temporary detour around the landslide. AZTEC delivered all aspects of the design and environmental compliance for the interim detour while supporting ADOT with close coordination and collaboration among the Federal Highway Administration, Navajo Nation, and Bureau of Indian Affairs. AZTEC provided comprehensive quality control, geometric roadway design, earthwork modeling, signing design, pavement marking, drainage engineering, construction cost estimating, specifications and construction document packaging for this essential project. The new interim detour shortened the previous detour by more than 50 miles and will function for two to three years while the permanent repair is completed on US89. In support of the FHWA Categorical Exclusion and BIA EA, technical studies included cultural resources surveys, Section 404 permitting, biological surveys and consultation, socioeconomic analyses, noise analyses, as well as hazardous materials investigations.
