PHOENIX (December 20, 2022) – AZTEC Engineering Group, Inc. (AZTEC), a wholly owned subsidiary of TYPSA Group, announced that it has successfully secured a US patent for its innovative and proprietary PVGRAdTM software for design optimization of utility-scale photovoltaic solar power plants. The software algorithms analyze site grading, tracker structures and foundation cost data, and produces a 3D simulation tool to determine the optimal design of ground-based single axis tracker photovoltaic solar power systems. It combines the project site digital terrain model and the proposed solar power plant system layout to produce the optimized design data points for the civil and structural design.

“We’re proud to continue to lead in the solar energy design and construction management space through our continued innovation and pioneer the development of digital optimization technologies such as PVGRAdTM that benefit the project in several aspects.” said Scott McKenzie, AZTEC Chief Executive Officer.

AZTEC has utilized PVGRAdTM on a wide range of projects since it was initially developed in 2018. PVGRAdTM has been key in the permitting final design, and construction phases of more than 3GW of projects in the US and 18GW worldwide. In all cases, the results PVGRAdTM  provided a significant reduction in earthwork volume, minimize site disturbance, and therefore alleviate the environmental and visual impacts of large solar plants when compared to standard design methods.

Javier Damia Levy, AZTEC Senior Vice President/Energy Practice Leader and author of the PVGRAdTM patent has continuously refined the software that uses advanced algorithms, eventually applying for the patent, which was granted in April 2022. Currently the software accommodates the latest generation trackers with angle points in their axles.

“PVGRAdTM is a solar-specific 3D BIM software which brings the solar development and construction process to early design phase stages, thus allowing for timely decision-making, improving project financials and reducing risks simultaneously,” said Damia Levy.
